Teen Counselling in Coquitlam (Ages 13–18)

The teenage years can bring challenges with anxiety, ADHD, emotional regulation, friendships, family changes and the pressure of growing up. At Bright Minds Counselling in Coquitlam, we offer supportive, individualized counselling to help teens better understand themselves, navigate difficult emotions and build skills that support their well-being.

Our approach is adapted to each teen's needs, interests and developmental stage, creating space for them to explore what's going on in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful.

A Counselling Approach That Fits Your Teen

Every teen is different, so counselling is tailored to their needs, personality and goals. Sessions may include conversation, creative and expressive activities, and practical strategies to help teens understand their emotions, manage stress and navigate challenges in their daily lives.

Depending on the teen's needs, counselling may draw on:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Exploring the connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and developing helpful ways to respond to challenges.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed strategies: Building skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance and navigating relationships.

  • Expressive and creative approaches: Using art and other forms of expression when talking about difficult experiences feels challenging.

  • Developmentally appropriate counselling: Making space for each teen's individuality, strengths, interests and readiness to explore what's going on.

The goal is to help teens develop a stronger understanding of themselves, build practical coping skills and feel more confident navigating the challenges they face.

Support for Teens and Their Parents

Starting counselling can raise questions for both teens and parents. Parents often want to help but may be unsure how to approach difficult conversations, support emotional regulation or respond when their teen is struggling.

When appropriate, parent involvement can help reinforce progress outside sessions. We can discuss general ways to support your teen, strengthen communication and navigate challenges at home while respecting your teen's privacy and developing independence.

The level of parent involvement depends on the teen's needs, age and circumstances. Confidentiality and its limits are discussed as part of the counselling process.

What Can Teen Counselling Help With?

Teen counselling can provide support with a range of emotional, social and behavioural challenges, including:

  • Anxiety, worry and stress

  • ADHD-related challenges, including organization, impulsivity and emotional regulation

  • Managing big emotions, frustration and overwhelm

  • Self-esteem, confidence and identity

  • Friendships, peer pressure and relationship difficulties

  • Family conflict, separation, divorce and other life changes

  • School-related stress and transitions

  • Coping with difficult experiences and changes in mood

Teens don't need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. Sometimes, having a supportive space to work through concerns and better understand themselves can make a meaningful difference.
